Unlike other companies that use created names for their brand, Eddie Bauer is a real person. He was the 1st to make quilted goose-down jackets in the country, and the appreciation for glossy-coated black labs isn’t just photogenic for catalogs; Bauer brought the 1st Labrador Retriever into Washington State in 1930. Born in the San Juans, his love of the outdoors inspired him to open a sports shop in the 1920’s in Seattle. The appreciation for a lifestyle that embraces nature continues 90 later as the new Eddie Bauer flagship store opens in Bellevue Square Mall, with a distinctive new look that harkens back to the history of the company’s namesake.

With an official ribbon-cutting ceremony set for 9:30am on Friday, July 23, the new store will welcome visitors into a store that feels less like a retail experience and more like the opportunity to explore an adventurer’s closet of collectables. A row of upside-down canoes hang from the ceiling, running the length of the store, presenting its woodsy lodge feel. Tall wardrobes house racks of clothing styled with a touch of vintage, as though you’re looking through a personal closet. Towards the back of the store there is a cozy hunter green nook with a wall of old photos and a sitting circle of timeworn leather chairs. There’s a personal touch on everything in the store, giving people a chance to see Eddie Bauer’s return to its heritage. Don’t be surprised to see a fuzzy, wet-nosed friend bounding through the store – the official company mascot, a black Labrador retriever puppy, is known to make special appearances.

The combination of fashion and function remains in the flagship store, past the comfy sweaters and softly-worn denim. The outdoor gear of backpacks and basic hiking equipment is expanded with their new First Ascent line of mountain outerwear. To celebrate the grand opening on Friday, customers will have the opportunity to meet special guests Jim Whittaker, the first American to summit Mount Everest, and Ed Viesturs, a high-altitude mountaineer who has not only conquered Everest, but all 14 of the world’s 8000-meter peaks.

Special events also include a free $20 savings card to the first 100 people who arrive on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (July 23-25); plus, every customer on those days will receive a special discount card worth 15-30% on their entire purchase. On Saturday, Eddie Bauer is sponsoring a free climbing wall at Bellevue Square’s Center Court from 11am - 6pm, so don’t forget to get your ‘Passport to Climb’ at the new store to have an adventure of your own.

Flint, the men’s grooming salon on Main Street, was no longer able to weather the economy since opening in February of 2009. As of this week they are closed for business.

This news comes only 1 week after Artisanal Brasserie and The Artisanal Table called it quits at The Bravern, on top of other retailers and restaurants closing within the past few months.

Main Street, although being a popular destination in Downtown Bellevue, has recently had its struggles maintaining tenants. One of the major concerns of prospects is the lack of parking available for visitors. In February we asked readers what they would like to see added to Main Street, and with Flint closing, this adds yet another opportunity for future tenants.

The long rows of gleaming bottles that stretch out towards the back of Pete’s Wine Shop is impressive, with shelves decorated with bright tags listing wallet-friendly prices on quality wines. First-time visitors to the store are often taken aback by the wide selection of wine and beer in the unassuming corner space in Bellevue Plaza, an older retail center nestled between all the new buildings in Downtown Bellevue. Pete’s has been a go-to wine resource for 20 years, proving that — like a good wine — time, experience, and good character can make something truly exceptional.

Opening its doors in 1990, Pete’s Wine Shop in Bellevue was the Eastside counterpart to the Seattle store on Lake Union, which opened in 1971. Pete’s in Bellevue took over a space that was previously a restaurant, clearing out all the booths and dividers to make a spacious shopping experience. Jan Hunsley recalls a customer coming in and remembering the previous life of the store as a restaurant, pointing out where the dance floor used to be. Jan knows the history of Pete’s Wine Shop well, as before taking over as manager in April of this year, she had worked at this location for over 12 years, watching the shelves expand in wine choices and seeing the local love for this store remain the same as the city developed and grew around it.

What has kept Pete’s Wine Shop such a successful business is its discount pricing on wines of all types, from the everyday favorites to special occasion bottles. Their markups tend to be lower than grocery stores and wine boutiques, and their large selection of wine, all bought directly from the winemakers, experience a high turnover rate. They also have a sizeable beer selection, offering wide-market brands as well as rare, limited edition bottles from microbreweries. The most notable thing about Pete’s is the staff itself, a knowledgeable group resource of wine information, with most of the people previously being loyal customers before eventually working at the store. They happily talk shop with fellow wine enthusiasts, as they would share recommendations with a first-time visitor who might feel overwhelmed by all the choices. The shopping experience is meant to be relaxed and un-fussy –- it really is all about the wine and trying to find the best fit for a person’s tastes.

Wandering the rows of bottles is like a trip around the world. Over 12 countries are represented in Pete’s collection, including wines from classic locales like Italy and France, as well as countries gaining momentum in the world of wine production like New Zealand, Argentina, South Africa, and Austria.

For those wanting to uncork something local, Pete’s has an equally comprehensive selection of Washington wines to highlight the region’s own growing profile as a notable wine producer. Starting this summer, Pete’s will be having periodic weekday tasting events with a local focus. The first event on July 1st, from 4:30pm – 7:30pm will focus on Woodinville wineries, spotlighting selections from Pomum, Stevens, and Darby. Along with these new summer tasting events, Pete’s continues to have its regular weekend tastings from 3pm – 7pm every Saturday at their tasting bar towards the back of the store.

According to a report Thursday in the Seattle Times, Bellevue Square is suing Movado over its plans to close their Bellevue Square store, located on the first floor of the mall. Movado has plans to close the store in this month, even though it has a 3-year outstanding commitment.

The suit that has been filed against Movado in King County Superior Court is seeking past due rent as well as future rent, through the end of the company’s lease; Movado’s leases is set to expire on September 20, 2013 (possibly upwards of $600,000).

Movado has planned, nationally, to shut down their 27-boutique stores throughout the US, but will remain operating their outlet stores and one flagship store in New York City.
